Dress Code and Etiquette on a Yacht: 7 Tips for the First-Time Guest

Dressing correctly for a yacht is not a question of status, but a mark of respect for your host, the vessel and the sea. It is a mix of practicality and relaxed elegance that lets you enjoy the experience to the full. For a first-timer, a visit to a luxury yacht can raise questions about what to wear and how to behave — these seven pieces of expert advice will see you right.

1. Shoes — the single most important choice

The most important rule on a yacht concerns footwear. Hard heels, black-soled shoes and dirty street shoes are always left on the dock, or dropped into the shoe basket as you step aboard. The reason is simple: they damage and permanently mark a delicate teak deck.

The best choice is soft-soled, light-coloured, non-marking boat shoes or genuinely clean canvas shoes. Often, though, the most respectful and practical option is to go barefoot. It signals that you understand yacht culture and that you appreciate the vessel you are a guest on.

2. What to wear on a day cruise — layers are everything

At sea, the weather can turn in a moment. Even when it is hot in the harbour, the wind of the boat’s own movement cools the air noticeably out on open water. The key to a successful outfit is good-quality layering.

Start with well-made, breathable basics: a linen shirt and smart shorts or chinos for men; a summer dress, an elegant jumpsuit, or linen trousers and a top for women. Bring a warm knit or a pashmina for the cooler moments. The single most useful item, though, is a windproof jacket. It saves the day when the wind picks up or the sun goes behind a cloud. If swimming is on the programme, wear your swimwear under your clothes or pack it somewhere easy to reach. A stylish kaftan or tunic is handy to throw on afterwards.

3. What to wear on a dinner cruise — refined but relaxed

A dinner cruise is a step more formal as an occasion, but the dress code is still a long way from black tie. What you’re aiming for is smart casual or resort chic: polished, but effortless.

For women, an elegant midi dress, a well-cut jumpsuit or wide-leg trousers with a silk blouse all work beautifully. For men, tailored trousers or good chinos with a collared shirt are a safe bet. A blazer finishes the look, but a tie is usually unnecessary unless the invitation specifically calls for one. The atmosphere is elegant, never stiff.

4. Accessories and sun protection — practicality first

The sun is stronger at sea because of the reflection off the water. Good polarised sunglasses, a high-factor sunscreen and a hat are essential. Choose a hat with a strap, or one that fits snugly, so the wind doesn’t take it.

Leave hard suitcases at home. A soft bag or a duffel is easy to pack and to stow on board. Avoid large, dangling jewellery too, which can catch on lines or equipment. Minimal is both stylish and safe.

5. Etiquette as a guest — respect the vessel and the crew

Good manners are part of a good yacht experience. Always listen to the safety instructions from the captain and crew — these are not suggestions, they exist to keep you safe. A yacht is someone’s home or a significant investment, so treat its spaces with care and keep your belongings tidy in the place set aside for them. Remember, too, that resources such as water and electricity are limited on board.

Treat the crew as the professionals they are, and with respect. Their job is to look after your comfort and safety, and a little gratitude makes everyone’s day better.

6. Packing list: what to bring and what to leave behind

To recap: pack good-quality clothes you can layer, soft-soled shoes, swimwear and plenty of sun protection. Bring any personal medication you take, and something for motion sickness just in case.

Definitely leave behind heels, hard cases and spray sunscreens, which can make a deck dangerously slippery and stain surfaces. Choose a lotion you rub in instead.

7. One last piece of advice: if in doubt, ask

The surest way to get it right is to ask your host or the cruise organiser. They will happily tell you what kind of occasion it is and what people are expected to wear. Is it a relaxed day trip into the archipelago or a more formal corporate event at the quay? A little forward planning makes sure you feel comfortable and appropriately dressed.

The right preparation is the key to a good day on board. Once the dress code and the etiquette are second nature, you can focus on what matters: the sea air, the scenery and the atmosphere that only a well-run cruise can offer.
